Cookie policy

Which cookies The Big Brains uses, why, and how you can change your choice at any time.

1. What cookies are

Cookies are small files a website stores in your browser. Some are needed for the site to work, like keeping you logged in. Others are optional, and we only use those if you allow them.

2. Our approach

Big Brains is used by school students, many of them under 18. So we keep cookies to a minimum:

  • Without your OK, we only use the cookies the site cannot run without (we call them essential).

  • Optional cookies (functional and analytics) stay off until you turn them on, and you can turn them off again at any time.

  • We never use advertising, marketing or cross-site tracking cookies.

  • Analytics never run for signed-in student accounts.

3. Cookies we use

Essential (always active):

  • better-auth.session_token (Big Brains): keeps you logged in. Lasts until you log out, up to 30 days.

  • Other better-auth.* cookies (Big Brains): security for logging in. Last for the session or until you log out.

  • bb_consent (Big Brains): remembers your cookie choices. Lasts 12 months, then we ask again.

  • Cloudflare Turnstile (challenges.cloudflare.com): checks that forms are sent by a person, not a bot. Set only when a form check runs.

Functional (off unless you allow it): none at the moment.

Analytics (off unless you allow it): none at the moment. If we add a tool, it will only run with your permission and we will list it here first.

4. Changing or withdrawing your choice

Use "Cookie settings" at the bottom of any page to change your choice. Withdrawing consent is as easy as giving it: turn a category off and we delete its cookies straight away. Your choice is saved in your browser. We also keep a record of each decision so we can show what was agreed and when: the choice, its date, a random id, your browser type, a one-way scrambled (salted hash) form of your network address that cannot be turned back into it, and your account if you are signed in.
